Calliope Hummingbirds in RI

Two immature Calliope Hummingbirds at the same flower garden (same salvia plant) in late October 2013 in Little Compton. Both birds a first record for RI. Both appeared the same day, 21 October. The bird with the black neck, which we called Cut-throat, departed 29 October on a strong southwest wind, so likely continued east. Clear-throat was displaced 6 November by a late Ruby-throated Hummingbird that appeared 5 November. That bird departed 13 November, the day after the season’s first measurable snowfall.  Photos by Geoff Dennis.
